Plant

Plant continues Marcus’ ongoing interest in the overlap of the aesthetics of the domestic and the industrial as well as the relationship between object and memory. Through the employment of a vitreous enamel process, Marcus examines the industrial history of the site as a significant place in both the provision of gas and in the industrial development of the city of Brisbane. Plant incorporates apertures inspired by the trivets of gas stoves tops emitting strong blue light and its construction recalls the modern vision of the bolted and fabricated components of the Victorian era Gasometer structure itself.

Two sculptures measuring 1800mm each, fabricated using 2.5 mm carbon steel hemispheres and apertures with a vitreous enamel coating featuring a banded or mottled surface pattern, high-grade aluminium frame with 12 mm base plate and concrete footing, 2 x 8 internal LED blue floodlights. Plant was commissioned in accordance with the Brisbane City Council’s Art in Public Places policy.

Consultants: Tom Dooley Developments in association with Plazibat Architects and Armitstead ART Consulting (curator Jacqueline Armitstead).
